So, Nicola already posted a bunch about our trip home, but I guess I'll add my two cents.
Saturday night, Pool Party (my old band from Kalamazoo) got together for a little reunion throw down. It was super fun.
There's something about Kalamazoo basement shows that Lexington can't seem to measure up to for me. Sure, they don't allow booze at the house shows here, but I feel like that's not what's missing. Part of it for me, I think, is that the kids here just aren't as intense about things. There are wonderful people here in Lex, and there is great music being played, but there's just not the same balls out "fuck it" attitude that I love about Michigan. Midwestern blood until the day I goddamn die, I guess.
One time I read "Your scene is only as lame as you are" on the bottom of a skateboard, and sometimes I think about that when I'm waxing nostalgic on those Kzoo days. I'm gonna try to get more positive about the scene here, and see if there's something I can do to change it for myself.
Anyway, enough of this cry baby crap. Here's what happened at the show:
The show was at my friends' (Chuck and Michelle) house. We got started pretty late, so everybody there was already pretty loose when the jams started flying. My good friend Matt Motzell opened the night up with his acoustic guitar. He was probably a little too inebriated, but that was kind of half the fun of his set. He rocked through a few originals and a cover, and when he wasn't laughing and leaning his face on the mic, he was great. I love that guy.
After Motzell came Bike Tuff. I can't get enough of this band. I've known them for quite a bit from older bands, and from hanging out, and they impress me every time I hear them. Latterman-esque pop-punk, super gutsy and passionate delivery, creative melodies. Awesome. These guys have a split seven inch with Home Life coming out soon, and I'm stoked to get it. Also, they played half a Piebald cover, which is always a golden idea. Perfect.
Then, we played. We were drunk. That was always kind of the point with Pool Party, though. It was almost too much fun for me. People sang along, Jimmy, our guitarist/vocalist, got naked, we played a dumb Alkaline Trio cover, it was good. I'll post pictures of the show when our friend Abby puts them online.
What an awesome night. I got to see some really good friends from Kalamazoo, a couple awesome friends came down from Grand Rapids, and my cousins came out, too! Nice.
I miss Michigan pretty severely right now.
